Job Description:
Data Intelligence Analyst – Growth Team, District Centres and Regeneration

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a 6 month Graduate Internship, working as a Data Intelligence Analyst in the Growth and Regeneration service at Croydon Council. The post sits under the Place Department and is responsible for the physical and economic regeneration of our neighbourhoods, localities and places.

Before you apply, please check that you are willing to travel to the London Borough of Croydon.

The Council

Croydon is a distinctive and diverse place and is London’s most populated borough. Croydon hasn’t seen expansion like we are currently experiencing since the 1960s. We’re already well underway with some £5bn of investment that will be completed over the next few years. New offices, new retail, and new homes will provide well-paid jobs and high-quality accommodation for our rapidly growing population.

Growth and Regeneration Team

This is an exciting team to join the Growth and Regeneration Team in the Council’s Place Department. We are responsible for delivering priority regeneration projects and programmes that ensure our districts, neighbourhoods and local centres remain vibrant and exciting places to live, work and visit. The Growth Team in particular, is fundamental in ensuring funding and investment opportunities which are needed to deliver projects are optimised.

The Growth and Regeneration Team work on a range of physical regeneration and economic growth projects, from ensuring our high streets are economically successful, to the delivery of high quality public realm and green spaces, and the delivery of major housing developments.

Croydon is changing and one of the issues we are currently engaged with is the changing nature of our suburbs, and whether our homes, transport network, libraries, schools, health centres and community buildings are able to accommodate the needs of a growing population.

The candidate will be operating in this setting and will work on specific projects which provide an in-depth understanding of our communities and places. This will guide the work of the regeneration team by providing the evidence needed to develop new programmes and projects, and help to establish the business case for investment.

We are currently working on a number of key projects which require a data analyst skills to develop further and refine.

Croydon’s 16 places and Regeneration Briefs.

Croydon’s residents have identified 16 places in Croydon which communicate their sense of belonging and community. Although some places closely correspond with electoral wards, others places do not. The aim is to spatially map the 16 places and build a rich physical and socio economic profile of each area which provides the evidence base for the area action plans (regeneration briefs). Work is already underway to develop a live dashboard to present the data.

Growth Index and Prioritisation Toolkit

Closely linked to the above is the Inclusive Growth Index – an innovative research project which seeks to develop around 3 local benchmarks which tell us about growth in Croydon and how inclusive this is. Supporting the index is the prioritisation toolkit which develops a portfolio approach to our programmes to optimise impact and outcomes. The candidate will be required to support the Growth Officer leading on this to develop a prototype.

Vacant Units Database

This is currently under development and is critical in helping the regeneration team to map out vacant commercial unit hotspots in the borough. Moving forward, the data will support the development of an action plan to bring back vacant premises to productive use. The candidate will be expected to take a proactive role in data mining, interpretation and analysis for these types of priority projects.

As the team data and intelligence analyst, not only will the candidate need to have excellent data analytical abilities, you will also need to demonstrate an understanding of the importance of a people centred approach to managing and handling information.

The Role

The Growth Team is recruiting for a professional, enthusiastic, hard-working and experienced data and intelligence analyst for a period of 6 months. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to gain an unrivalled insight into a career in data and intelligence management in a regeneration setting.

Candidates will be required to:

  • Managing, organising, analysing and interpreting large amounts of socio-economic and regeneration related datasets to:
    • Work with Growth officers and internal colleagues to build socio economic profiles on Croydon’s 16 places.

  • Communicate and present findings clearly and accessibly in the form of reports, using data visualisation software and GIS mapping tools.
  • Work with external partners and other stakeholders to deliver tasks and activities.
