The Company

The C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, now in its 14th year, connects 94 of the world’s greatest cities which have committed to tackling climate change. We bring mayors from around the world together to learn from each other in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and creating resilient, sustainable and low carbon cities. C40 cities represent more than 700 million urban citizens and their economies account for 25% of the global GDP. C40’s ‘Deadline 2020’ report sets out the critical role that the world’s major cities have to play in delivering the historic Paris Agreement to prevent catastrophic climate change.

C40’s team of 180+ staff is headquartered in New York, with offices in London, Rio de Janeiro, Copenhagen, Beijing and Paris and individual staff based across 25+ different locations. C40 is primarily funded through the generous support of philanthropic foundations.

The strategic direction of the organization is determined by an elected Steering Committee of C40 mayors which is chaired by the Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo. Three-term Mayor of New York City Michael R. Bloomberg serves as President of the C40 Board of Directors, which is responsible for operational oversight. An eight-person management team, led by Executive Director, Mark Watts, leads the day-to-day management of C40. C40’s three core strategic funders are Bloomberg Philanthropies, the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF) and Realdania.

Financing Sustainable Cities Initiative (FSCI)

The  vision of the FSCI is a world where all cities can access the financing they need to implement vital sustainable infrastructure and achieve their ambitious climate goals – limiting global temperature rise and improving the lives of their citizens both today and for generations to come.

The purpose of the FSCI is to support the acceleration and scaling-up of investments in sustainable urban solutions, without which the targets of the Paris Agreement cannot be met. The FSCI sees cities as not only drivers of positive change but also exciting investment opportunities.

To this end, the Initiative is built around three main objectives:

  • Bridging the gap between innovation and implementation in cities
  • Scaling up investments in sustainable urban solutions
  • Developing suitable business models to support innovation

To deliver on this vision, the FSCI works with cities through a range of activities. These include organising and running Forums, workshops and Finance Academies for cities, coordinating technical assistance projects, conducting research and facilitating peer-to-peer knowledge exchange.

At current, the FSCI focuses on financing solutions for clean transportation, clean energy and climate adaptation in cities. As it continues to expand, the Initiative will look to take on new areas of work (e.g. water), whilst expanding existing support areas.

The Role

This role will support the work of the full Financing Sustainable Cities Initiative team to deliver support to C40 cities on financing sustainable infrastructure projects. This includes the delivery of a series of workshops and events, as well as technical assistance, research and peer-to-peer learning opportunities. In this role, the successful candidate will also coordinate the delivery of communications objectives and day to day team coordination tasks. As such, the successful candidate will help to engage C40 member cities, state and national governments, financial institutions, and the private sector in the work of C40 and of the FSCI.

If selected, working a 40-hour week, s/he will have the opportunity to develop skills and understanding in a range of subject areas, gaining valuable experience working with international colleagues in a fast-paced and exciting global organization.

The responsibilities of the role will include:

  • Work with the FSCI Events and Projects Officer (and the relevant sector manager) to plan and deliver a series of Finance Academies and the 2020 Financing Sustainable Cities Forum. This will include supporting the team in arranging event venues, catering, audio-visual equipment, translation services, branded collateral and potentially on the ground support during the event(s) (tbc).
  • Create and maintain organisational tools, such as databases, and support the FSCI team in tracking invitations, responses and external communications.
  • Draft event related content including, but not limited to, briefing documents, slide decks and communication materials.
  • Support the FSCI Events and Projects Officer in coordinating travel for speakers, city officials, C40 staff, and technical experts. This may include booking flights and handling ad hoc requests for information from event attendees, city officials and experts.
  • TBC - Assist on the ground to manage smooth delivery of events. Will involve some international travel.
  • Support post-event liaising with technical experts and suppliers to arrange invoice payment and expense reimbursement, uploading content to C40 web platforms, contributing to outcomes reports, and preparing written guidance for future events.
  • Work with FSCI thematic managers to provide administrative support for delivery of technical assistance to cities.

    Person Specification

  • Passionate about the mission of C40, with a strong interest in helping cities overcome their sustainability challenges.
  • Demonstrable experience and interest in events planning and execution.
  • Effective communicator and collaborator who can work well in a fast-paced and high-pressure environment.
  • Highly organised, detail-oriented and able to successfully manage multiple overlapping tasks.
  • Effective written and oral communication in English. Other languages spoken in C40 cities are also desirable, particularly Spanish. International experience, particularly working across different cultures, languages and time zones is also desirable.
  • Utmost discretion when dealing with confidential and sensitive information.
  • Willingness to travel internationally and occasionally work non-standard hours if required.
  • Must have the right to live and work in the United Kingdom/United States (depending on application location).
