The Company

The C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, now in its 14th year, connects 94 of the world’s greatest cities which have committed to tackling climate change. We bring mayors from around the world together to learn from each other in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and creating resilient, sustainable and low carbon cities. C40 cities represent more than 700 million urban citizens and their economies account for 25% of the global GDP. C40’s ‘Deadline 2020’ report sets out the critical role that the world’s major cities have to play in delivering the historic Paris Agreement to prevent catastrophic climate change.

C40’s team of 180+ staff is headquartered in New York, with offices in London, Rio de Janeiro, Copenhagen, Beijing and Paris and individual staff based across 25+ different locations. C40 is primarily funded through the generous support of philanthropic foundations.

The strategic direction of the organization is determined by an elected Steering Committee of C40 mayors which is chaired by the Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo. Three-term Mayor of New York City Michael R. Bloomberg serves as President of the C40 Board of Directors, which is responsible for operational oversight. An eight-person management team, led by Executive Director, Mark Watts, leads the day-to-day management of C40. C40’s three core strategic funders are Bloomberg Philanthropies, the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF) and Realdania.

The Role

The successful intern will work with the Knowledge and Learning Directorate to support C40s world leading research and knowledge management efforts.  The role will involve supporting on team coordination and administration, with additional opportunities to gain experience of: research – including reviewing key topics, analysing city interviews, undertaking analysis of city-specific policies and projects; and knowledge management – including reviewing and writing material for the C40 Knowledge Hub, supporting data visualisation and dashboards, and supporting promotion and knowledge transfer.

If selected, working a 40-hour week, this internship will provide significant experience of C40’s research and knowledge sharing programmes, in particular the C40 Knowledge Hub and Benefits research.  Interns will also have the opportunity to engage with C40 staff across the organisation, as well as supporting city engagement in key research and knowledge activities. At the end of the programme the intern will have supported the Knowledge and Learning team during the critical Knowledge Hub launch and promotion gaining experience of key team coordination and administration skills as well as developing climate and cities knowledge.  During the internship the benefits research manager will be on leave for 2 months, this role will help support the research during that time, working closely with the senior research manager and helping to ensure consistent communication and support with the participating cities.


The responsibilities of the role will include:

  • Supporting team coordination and administration, including for events and strategy development (at least 50% of the time), including
    • Coordinating team meetings and events, and capturing notes
    • Supporting the review and revision of team filing and policies

  • Supporting research including:
    • Benefits research support for consistent communication and support with the participating cities
    • Researching particular topics to support project proposals or specific city enquiries
    • Analysis of city interview data to draw out key themes
    • Analysis of city policies and projects to understand the GHG and wider benefits of action

  • Supporting knowledge management, including:
    • Draft brief (1-3 paragraph) summaries of complex, long-form documentation (articles, research reports, interviews, webinars, white papers, etc.).
    • Conduct independent research to identify potential knowledge products for inclusion.
    • Assist with uploading of content onto the Knowledge Hub.
    • Help create engagement materials (newsletters, email outreach, invitations to join the community, etc.).

Person Specification

  • Extremely well organised
  • Excellent interpersonal and team working skills
  • Good research skills - ability to understand a variety of technical information and communicate this in an accessible way for our city audience.
  • A passion for writing and an excellent eye for detail.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple work streams at the same time.
  • Strong understanding of climate issues and/or urban politics.
  • English proficiency required; advanced language skills in additional languages would be beneficial.
  • Work experience with knowledge management and/or research would be beneficial but not required.
  • Basic understanding of G-Suite products (email, calendar), Microsoft Office, graphic design, or Salesforce products (Communities/Knowledge/CRM) extremely useful but not required -training can be provided on the job.
