The Company

Total Gas & Power Ltd is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Total Group responsible for energy Marketing and Trading activities in the UK.  We supply natural gas to many thousands of sites across the UK, and we are market leaders in the highly competitive I&C sector (by gas volume).  Based in the head office in Canary Wharf (London) the Trading division is responsible for optimising the purchase/sales portfolios of gas, electricity, CO2 emissions, coal, and LNG, via transactions (arbitrage, balancing and hedging) in all recognised markets worldwide, in compliance with Group trading guidelines. Alongside the traders we have risk analysts, shipping and chartering operators and gas and power schedulers.

Job Description: Working as an intern, reporting to the Middle Office Manager, the Junior Middle Office Analyst will work the Risk team and will seek to measure, analyse and monitor the P&L, Exposure and the Value At Risk of the Trading Desks.

The Middle Office is responsible for calculating profits and losses and for managing the risks of the trading department. It is responsible for all aspects of market risk control, such as risk identification, measurement, monitoring and disclosure.
The Top Management of the Gas branch follows and controls the trading activity through the Middle Office reports.


  • Assist in valuation of the trading portfolio (including Physical, Futures, Swaps, Options and Storage positions) using “Mark-to-Market” accounting.
  • Produce and Analyse Exposure, Value at Risk, Performance adjusted to Risk indicators reports to monitor the trading portfolios.
  • Help in analysing market movements and understanding how this will impact the risks held by the Trading Desks.
  • Work closely with Traders to quantify and explain the sources of risk in their portfolios.
  • Reporting of Trading Result/ Position to Senior management.
  • Work closely with Back Office, Finance, Credit, Legal & Compliance, Business Unit Control to ensure best control practices and policy/limit compliance.
  • Make sure that Risk Control required the Sarbanes-Oxley’s procedures is performed.
  • Liaise with Trading System to ensure the enhancement the trading software.
  • Liaise Research & Analysis and Trading on the validation valuation methodologies

Qualifications / Experience Required:

  • Studying towards economics/finance/business/mathematics or quantitative discipline.
  • Understanding of risk management methodologies and valuation models.
  • High levels of numeracy and computer literacy.
  • High degree of accuracy and efficiency under set deadlines.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
  • High levels of flexibility with regard working hours.
  • Good interpersonal skills..
