Job Description:

The London Borough of Waltham Forest are looking for an intern to join the families’ directorate. The internships will be for 6 months, based at the council offices in Walthamstow.

The positions will start in mid-March /early April 2017, so all applicants must be available immediately.

The Role

The London Borough of Waltham Forest are looking to appoint a Local Government intern in its Families Directorate.

Applicants will have an opportunity to express a preference at interview with preference for the role they fill if successful. There is also the possibility of rotation of interns between the roles.

Families Directorate Interns

These posts will be key in supporting a range of projects across Waltham Forest’s Families Directorate, which covers the following service areas: Education Improvement, Adult Social Care, Children’s Social Care, Public Health and Early Help.

This is a time of significant change for the Directorate as we work to meet financial challenges and changes in statutory requirements – there are a range of projects underway across the Directorate, coordinated under a ‘Redefining Families’ change programme.

The post holder will work in conjunction with project and programme managers, service managers and Directors within the Families Directorate. They may undertake or support a variety of pieces of work, including but not limited to:

  • Developing new initiatives under the Leader’s Priorities – for example increasing our youth participation programme
  • Supporting projects to ensure that the local authority meets all its statutory duties under new legislation – for example the Care Act or SEND reforms
  • Contributing to new policies, strategies and other documentation from a range of service areas, which will involve consulting with councillors, staff and residents;
  • Supporting Directors within the Families directorate on projects that reduce budgets, bring in income or deliver improvements for residents
  • Responding to enquiries from councilors and residents

The interns will be line managed within the Council’s Transformation & Business Change unit, which provides project and programme management support to the Families Directorate and coordinates the Redefining Families and Service Review programmes.

The intern will support the successful delivery of a number of projects which will contribute towards several benefits to the council, including: 

  • Ensuring a balanced budget in line with reductions in funding from Central Government;
  • Successful delivery of the Leader’s priority projects;
  • Successfully meeting its statutory duties;
  • Delivering services that are successful in meeting local need in an efficient and outcomes-focused way

By the end of the internship the intern should have developed:

  • A broad knowledge base of Council services, particularly within the Families directorate
  • An understanding of the current financial and legislative challenges facing local authorities and how we are responding to these within Families directorate
  • A basic understanding of project management principles
  • Improved skills in research, data/service analysis, office administration, stakeholder engagement and management

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A degree in any related subject
  • Interest in public sector and local government
  • Interest in project management
  • Someone keen to learn and develop their skills
  • Ability to work across teams and projects
  • Fast learner
  • Good attention to detail
  • Ability in statistical/data analysis would be advantageous
